Kornhaus: Modern escapes

    Design Carl Fieger / Built 1929- 30
    Commissioned by Schultheiss-Patzenhofer-Brauerei
in association with the municipality of Dessau
    God’s Entertainment, Wien

In the early 1920s, there was already a restaurant, owned by the Dessauer Brauerei, on the site – that of a former granary. In the 1920s, the owner decided to renovate and extend the venue, which was popular with day-trippers. Built in 1927, the Kornhaus offered rest and relaxation in a city characterised by the rhythms of industry. The building suggests a condensed environment, where distance is communicated through proximity. The ship motif is therefore not only a reference to the nearby river, but also promises temporary escape to other shores. In a city still characterised by industry, the Kornhaus is one of the few places where the Bauhaus’ modern architecture has remained largely unchanged, although both demand and public have diversified in the meantime. Symbolising an urban shore, the building is still associated with the concept of connecting the city with the river.
